Kathmandu— A new trekking route leading to Rikhar, a renowned religious site in Kuinemangale, Ward No. 8 of Raghuganga Rural Municipality, Myagdi district, Nepal, has been completed. The trail was built to address difficulties faced by visitors accessing the area, particularly during peak pilgrimage times like Janai Purnima. Construction began after recognizing a need for improved infrastructure to support both religious devotees and those exploring the natural beauty surrounding Dhaulagiri Base Camp. The project was funded through the rural municipality’s current fiscal year budget.

Trail Construction Details

The footpath was constructed by a users’ committee with an allocation of Rs. 500,000 (approximately $3,750 USD). Approximately 60 meters of trail were built at several challenging locations along the route. Chitra Bahadur Chhetry, chairman of both the Trekking Route Construction Users’ Committee and the Likhar Conservation Committee, explained that travelers previously faced significant difficulties due to the lack of a proper path.

Rikhar's Religious Significance

Located at an altitude of approximately 4,500 meters near Dhaulagiri Base Camp, Rikhar holds deep religious importance for Hindus and Buddhists alike. The site is considered sacred, believed to be where the Seven Sages (Saptarishis) meditated and attained spiritual enlightenment. Special worship ceremonies and rituals are traditionally performed at Rikhar on Janai Purnima, attracting a large number of pilgrims annually.

Local Government Support for Tourism

Kulraj Paudel, Chief Administrative Officer of Raghuganga Rural Municipality, emphasized the importance of improving access to Rikhar. He stated that the trail’s construction was specifically timed to facilitate easier travel for devotees during Janai Purnima celebrations. Chhetry also called on local government to prioritize developing tourism infrastructure and promoting the area's natural and religious attractions.

The completion of the trekking route is expected to boost both pilgrimage tourism and access to the natural beauty surrounding Rikhar, contributing to the economic development of Raghuganga Rural Municipality.
