Nepalese Lawmakers Demand Improved Disaster Preparedness After Deadly Landslides and Floods

Kathmandu— Members of Nepal’s House of Representatives have urged the government to improve its disaster preparedness following a series of landslides and floods triggered by heavy rainfall across the country. Lawmakers raised concerns during an urgent session, demanding increased safety measures for affected families and effective treatment for those injured in recent incidents. The calls came after reports of significant loss of life and property damage in multiple districts, including Rolpa, Jajarkot, Bajura, Kaski, and Parbat.

Extent of Recent Damage

Padma Kumari Aryal highlighted the widespread impact of recent landslides and floods, noting that 18 people had lost their lives in Rolpa district alone over a two-day period. She also reported significant impacts in Jajarkot, Bajura, Kaski, Parbat, and other districts across Nepal. Barsha Man Pun echoed these concerns, specifically drawing the government’s attention to the need for improved disaster management preparedness given the scale of recent losses.

Calls for Government Action

Lawmakers requested that the government prioritize the treatment of injured individuals and ensure the safety of those living in high-risk areas. Balawati Sharma reported damage in Baglung district and also requested government assistance with cooking gas supply, while Rajeev Khatri assured landless squatters that their needs remained a priority for the government.

Tributes to Literary Figure

In addition to disaster relief concerns, several members of parliament paid tribute to poet Durga Lal Shrestha following his recent passing. Ganesh Parajuli lauded Shrestha’s contributions to Nepal’s literary sector.

The House of Representatives is expected to continue discussions on disaster management and allocate resources towards preparedness efforts in the coming days.
