Union Organizer’s Scholar Retires After Decades of Research

Kathmandu— For four decades, Kate Bronfenbrenner has been a leading scholar on the dynamics of union organizing, studying why some campaigns succeed while others fail. Retiring this year from Cornell University, her research has fundamentally changed how unions approach organizing drives, shifting focus to building strong rank-and-file organizations and strategically researching corporate structures. Beginning with dissertation work in the late 1980s, Bronfenbrenner interviewed organizers, analyzed employer tactics, and ultimately developed a model for effective campaigns that prioritized grassroots engagement over quick wins. Her findings have been disseminated through academic publications, training programs like Cornell’s Strategic Corporate Research Summer School, and direct consultation with unions across the country.

From Activism to Academia

Bronfenbrenner’s path to becoming a labor scholar was rooted in activism. Growing up in Ithaca, New York, she was influenced by her parents’ involvement in social justice movements—her father worked on Head Start and participated in the civil rights movement, while her mother campaigned for anti-war candidates. This early exposure led her to participate in protests as a teenager and later fueled her work with food banks, welfare rights organizations, and labor groups in Seattle and Mississippi. A violent attack in 1977 left her with a permanent disability, prompting a shift towards labor education after realizing the physical demands of traditional organizing would become increasingly challenging.

The Importance of Foundational Organizing

Bronfenbrenner’s research revealed that successful union campaigns weren’t about employing sophisticated tactics, but rather mastering the basics. “There was no silver bullet,” she said, emphasizing the need for unions to understand their workforce, identify employer strategies, and build active organizing committees. Her work highlighted a critical gap: many unions were launching weak campaigns without establishing these fundamental building blocks. This insight led to her ‘Blueprint for Change,’ a major assessment of successful union organizing strategies distributed widely by the AFL-CIO.

Strategic Corporate Research Takes Root

Bronfenbrenner’s research expanded beyond individual workplaces to encompass the broader corporate landscape. She pioneered strategic corporate research, tracing ownership, finances, and supply chains to identify leverage points for unions. This approach was particularly evident in her work on Ravenswood Aluminum, where she demonstrated how a union could successfully challenge a multinational corporation by targeting its various stakeholders. The Strategic Corporate Research Summer School at Cornell, which she founded, trained generations of organizers and researchers in this methodology, equipping them with the tools to analyze complex corporate structures and develop effective campaigns.

Adapting to a Changing Labor Landscape

Bronfenbrenner’s work has increasingly focused on the challenges posed by globalization and the rise of companies like Amazon. She argues that unions must confront these large corporations directly, even if it means embracing new organizing models beyond traditional NLRB elections. Her research underscores the importance of building sustained campaigns focused on achieving concrete changes for workers, rather than solely pursuing election victories. “If you define victory as winning an election, that’s a big mistake,” she explained. “You have to organize.”

A Lasting Legacy

Throughout her career, Bronfenbrenner faced resistance from both employers and some within the labor movement itself. Her insistence on holding unions accountable for their own tactics—rather than solely focusing on employer opposition—was often met with skepticism. However, her research has become increasingly influential, shaping strategic approaches to organizing across a range of industries and countries. As she retires, Bronfenbrenner leaves behind a legacy of rigorous scholarship, practical training, and a commitment to empowering workers.

Bronfenbrenner’s approach to corporate research continues through the Strategic Corporate Research Summer School at CUNY and is increasingly adopted by unions seeking to navigate the complexities of modern labor relations.
