French Police Intercept Migrants Attempting English Channel Crossing

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— French police intervened on a beach this week, halting an attempt by dozens of migrants to cross the English Channel in an inflatable boat. The incident, captured by drone footage released by the UK’s Border Security Command, occurred as the migrants were pushing the vessel towards the water. Reports indicate that some migrants responded with stones, leading officers to use pepper spray and knives to deflate the boat.

Confrontation on the Beach

Officers moved onto the beach as the group of migrants, all wearing life jackets, attempted to launch their inflatable boat towards Britain. According to ITV News, some individuals within the migrant group threw stones at the responding officers. Police then deployed pepper spray and used knives to slash the boat, preventing its departure.

Declining Crossing Numbers

Despite this intervention, officials report that approximately 15,900 migrants have successfully crossed the Channel so far this year. This figure represents a 43% decrease compared to the same period last year. The UK Home Office highlighted a recent increase in deportations, stating that over 80,000 criminals and immigration offenders have been deported since July 2024.

UK Government Response

The issue of illegal immigration remains politically sensitive in the United Kingdom, with recent events sparking riots and protests linked to crimes involving migrants. Prime Minister Andy Burnham, who took office last month, has pledged a firm stance on preventing small-boat crossings, describing his administration as “relentless” in its efforts. This commitment followed a single-day arrival of 752 migrants aboard nine boats on July 29 – the highest number this year.

The situation remains fluid, with European officials continuing to monitor migration patterns and address related security concerns.
