Kathmandu— Samantha Bowie, a U.S. woman, has been charged with plotting to bomb the New York State Capitol building before attempting to travel abroad and join the Islamic State (ISIS) terrorist group, according to federal prosecutors in the Northern District of New York. Investigators claim Bowie expressed support for extremist ideologies online, including praising the 9/11 attacks, and conducted reconnaissance of the capitol building with the intent to inflict maximum damage and casualties on state senators during a meeting. She was apprehended Wednesday after allegedly obtaining what she believed was an explosive device.

Alleged Plot Details

The U.S. Attorney’s Office alleges Bowie pledged allegiance to ISIS, demonstrating her commitment to the terrorist organization's goals. Investigators say she posted extremist messages online and specifically targeted the New York State Capitol as a location for an attack, intending to “destroy as much of the building as possible and kill the senators.” Officials stated that Bowie made multiple visits to the capitol building, taking photographs in preparation for the planned bombing.

Arrest And Evidence

Bowie was detained on Wednesday after allegedly acquiring what she believed to be an explosive device. The Department of Justice and FBI released images purportedly showing Bowie wearing black Islamic clothing covering her face at a convenience store, where authorities claim she purchased materials for bomb-making. Another image reportedly depicts Bowie taking pictures with her phone; however, her face is not visible in either photograph.

Official Response

First Assistant U.S. Attorney John Sarcone III stated that the arrest would “send a strong message to anyone across the country who has been radicalized by our enemies.” The case highlights ongoing concerns about domestic extremism and potential terrorist threats within the United States.

The investigation is ongoing, and Bowie faces federal charges related to terrorism offenses. Further details regarding her alleged plans and connections to ISIS are expected to emerge during legal proceedings.
