Russia Launches Bear Cull Following Fatal Tourist Attack

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Following a recent surge in violent encounters, Russian authorities in the Altai Republic region of southern Siberia have initiated a bear cull after a 29-year-old tourist was fatally mauled while sleeping in her tent. The attack is part of a broader pattern of increased bear activity across Russia this summer, with at least a dozen reported incidents since the beginning of the season and multiple fatalities.

Recent Attacks Spark Response

The fatal incident occurred on Wednesday when a bear entered a tent near the village of Artybash and dragged a woman from Novosibirsk Region into the forest. Despite attempts by her fiancé and local residents to deter the animal, it continued to charge, resulting in the woman’s death. This attack follows similar events earlier this summer: a 62-year-old man was killed in Magadan Region in July, and a fisherman died in Kamchatka after being attacked by a bear in June – officials subsequently shot that animal.

Cull and Safety Measures Implemented

In response to the escalating situation, regional authorities have launched a population control operation, issuing additional hunting permits near Artybash. Twelve bears have been killed so far, with one potentially identified as the attacker. Authorities are also utilizing drones for tracking purposes and continuing the cull. Beyond the culling effort, the district has implemented heightened safety measures including restricted movement between 8 PM and 10 AM, a ban on tent camping in affected areas, increased patrols by police and hunters, and limited access to certain tourist sites.

Growing Bear Population

Russia’s brown bear population has seen significant growth in recent decades. According to data from the Natural Resources Ministry, the current population is estimated at around 308,000 – more than double the number recorded in 1990. The largest concentrations of bears are found in Siberia and the Far East, with approximately 4,700 residing in Altai Republic.

Official Guidance for Bear Encounters

Russian officials have issued guidance to help people avoid conflict with bears. They advise against running or approaching bear cubs, recommending instead that individuals slowly back away, avoid direct eye contact, and make loud noises if a bear continues to approach. In the event of an unavoidable attack, citizens are instructed to protect their head and neck and fight back using any available means.

The cull remains ongoing as authorities continue to monitor the situation and prioritize the safety of residents and tourists in the Altai Republic.
