US House Speaker Confident Republicans Will Win Midterms Despite Iran Conflict

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— United States House Speaker Mike Johnson stated he is confident the Republican Party will retain control of the chamber in the upcoming midterm elections, despite public frustration with the ongoing conflict involving Iran. In an interview on Fox News Sunday, Johnson said a resolution to the conflict before November 3rd “would be helpful,” but affirmed Republicans could “absolutely” win even if fighting continues. The comments come as rising oil prices and increasing national debt fuel public discontent with the war, which began after US and Israeli forces attacked Iran in February.

Political Stakes of Ongoing Conflict

Johnson, a close ally of former President Donald Trump, framed Republican success as tied to their actions regarding Iran. He stated, “People know we took the head off the snake,” referring to targeting Iranian leadership and asserting it was necessary to prevent Iran from developing nuclear weapons. Despite acknowledging public dissatisfaction, Johnson expressed confidence in his party’s ability to secure victory in November.

Economic Impact Fuels Public Concern

The conflict has had a significant economic impact, driving up oil prices globally and contributing to inflation within the United States. The price of gasoline has risen sharply, exceeding $4 per gallon in many areas – an increase from less than $3 before the war began. This surge in energy costs is occurring as the US national debt continues to grow, adding to public frustration. Iran’s closure of the Strait of Hormuz, a critical waterway for global energy trade, has exacerbated these economic pressures.

Strait of Hormuz and Oil Flow

US officials have claimed that oil continues to flow through the Strait of Hormuz via a southern corridor near Oman's shores, despite Iran’s attempts to restrict access. However, gasoline prices in the US remain elevated, hovering above $4 per gallon. Johnson echoed these claims on Sunday, stating “We’re getting the job done step by step,” and expressing belief that allied nations will assist in resolving the situation.

Ceasefire Fragility and Future Negotiations

While an initial ceasefire was announced in April, fighting has continued intermittently between US/Israeli forces and Iran. The Trump administration imposed “crushing” economic sanctions on Tehran, prompting defiance from Iranian officials who maintain control over the Strait of Hormuz. Johnson expressed skepticism about negotiating with Iran, stating, “You can’t trust the Iranians on the other side of the negotiating table.” He anticipates further assistance from allied nations in reaching a final resolution.

The situation remains volatile as the global economy braces for intense sanctions against Iran and countries that continue to do business with it. The outcome of negotiations and the duration of the conflict will likely play a significant role in shaping both regional stability and US domestic politics.
