Kathmandu— Nepal’s Foreign Affairs Minister, Shisir Khanal, will travel to Belgrade, Serbia on August 30th with a three-member delegation to participate in a commemorative meeting of the Non-Aligned Movement (NAM). The event, scheduled for August 31st and September 1st, marks the 65th anniversary of NAM, an organization Nepal views as central to its foreign policy. Minister Khanal is expected to return to Nepal on September 2nd following the conclusion of the meeting.

Historical Significance of Belgrade

The commemorative meeting will be held in Belgrade due to the city’s historical importance to the Non-Aligned Movement; it was the site of the organization’s first summit in 1961. This year’s event aims to honor that legacy and reaffirm the principles of NAM as a global force.

Nepal’s Longstanding Commitment to Non-Alignment

Nepal has consistently prioritized non-alignment as a foundational principle of its foreign policy, with this commitment formally enshrined in its constitution. The country has actively participated in all levels of NAM events, from the initial Bandung Conference through subsequent summits and ministerial gatherings. This participation underscores Nepal’s dedication to the movement’s core tenets.

Global Participation Expected

The high-level commemorative event is expected to draw leaders, delegations, and representatives from countries across the globe that are members of the Non-Aligned Movement. The meeting provides a platform for international dialogue and cooperation based on the principles of non-alignment.

Minister Khanal’s participation in the Belgrade commemoration reaffirms Nepal’s continued support for the Non-Aligned Movement and its objectives.
