Kathmandu— The death toll from a catastrophic glacier collapse in the Himalayas has risen to nearly 800, with at least 797 people confirmed dead and over 3,048 missing. The disaster occurred on Wednesday when part of a glacier at an altitude of roughly 5,200 meters (17,000 feet) collapsed, sending water and debris through several villages in Nepal and China. Rescue operations have been suspended repeatedly due to poor weather conditions and fears of further flooding.

Death Toll Details

Nepal announced an updated death toll of 781 on Sunday, with 2,502 people missing, including 592 foreign nationals. In China, state broadcaster CCTV reported 16 deaths and 546 people missing, including 261 foreigners. The disaster has also trapped more than 100 workers inside several hydropower tunnels.

Rescue Efforts

Specialized search-and-rescue teams from India, China, and South Korea have joined the recovery operations in Nepal and China. Malaysia is deploying its Special Malaysia Disaster Assistance Search and Rescue Team (SMART) and contributing $1 million in recovery assistance. International funding has begun to arrive, with the European Union promising $2.3 million on Friday.

Burial Operations

Authorities in Nepal began burying some of the victims on Sunday after taking DNA samples for future identification. Many bodies were carried away by floodwaters, leaving families unable to locate and identify their relatives. Mass burials are taking place in Chitwan district.
