Kathmandu— A massive mudslide has hit a border port in Gyirong county, Shigatse, Xizang autonomous region, leaving 261 foreign nationals missing. The victims hail from 23 different countries, with the largest groups being from Nepal and India. Local authorities have set up hotlines for families of the missing and are working to trace and verify information.
Nationalities of Missing Nationals
The missing individuals include nationals from a wide range of countries, with the largest groups being 104 from Nepal and 49 from India. Other affected nationalities include Latvia (33), the United States (18), the United Kingdom (15), Canada (6), Australia (6), South Africa (4), Russia (3), Germany (3), Malaysia (3), France (2), Ireland (2), Estonia (2), New Zealand (2), and the Netherlands (2). Smaller numbers of individuals from Lithuania, Portugal, Spain, Hungary, Finland, Ukraine, and Kazakhstan are also unaccounted for.
Search Efforts and Communication
Zhao Peng, vice-chairman of Xizang and deputy head of the disaster's emergency and rescue command headquarters, stated that extensive damage to infrastructure and personnel records has significantly hampered tracing efforts. Two 24-hour English-language hotlines have been established for families seeking information on their missing relatives: 0086-891-6817165 and 0086-18308026705.
Zhao also noted that all foreign tourists are accounted for, with the remaining registered individuals being primarily Nepali border residents, cross-border vehicle crews, and Nepali individuals in international marriages. These groups have been confirmed safe.
Humanitarian Support and Departure Plans
For Nepali border residents wishing to return home, authorities will facilitate transfer, transportation, and customs clearance processes while ensuring their safety and well-being. Those choosing to stay in Xizang will receive security and living support.
Zhao emphasized that staff members will respect the wishes of the Nepali side and prioritize humanitarian needs through friendly consultation. A thorough evaluation is underway to assess departure needs for foreign tourists, with plans to facilitate safe exits through ports in Lhasa, Burang, and Zhangmu.
