Chinese Manufacturers Expand Globally Through Cross-Border E-Commerce

Kathmandu— In the past three years, a Chinese company has seen its annual sales on a cross-border e-commerce platform skyrocket from over $4 million to more than $60 million while expanding its market presence from North America to Europe and Japan. This growth highlights how traditional export-oriented manufacturers are increasingly turning to online platforms to reach global consumers directly.

Benefits of Cross-Border E-Commerce

Zhao Jing, general manager of Partners (Qingdao) Home Decoration Co., Ltd., noted that cross-border e-commerce allows the company to avoid traveling overseas for exhibitions and relying on foreign-trade intermediaries. "We can reach consumers around the world directly through just one online store," Zhao said. The platform also provides data insights that guide product development, enabling rapid expansion into global markets.

Success Stories

Shandong Hightop Group has leveraged cross-border e-commerce to establish a strong presence in overseas markets. Since the beginning of this year, its exports through these platforms have exceeded 73.7 million U.S. dollars, up 70 percent from last year. The company's mini excavators now account for more than half of the e-commerce market in Europe and the United States.

Government Support

The Chinese government has recognized the importance of cross-border e-commerce as a new driver of high-quality development in foreign trade. The 15th Five-Year Plan (2026-2030) calls for supporting this sector, and guidelines have been released to encourage the integration of market procurement with cross-border e-commerce and the use of China-Europe freight trains. E-commerce platforms like Amazon and Alibaba are also providing support programs and AI agents to help companies expand overseas.

Challenges and Solutions

Despite its benefits, cross-border e-commerce poses significant challenges for manufacturers, including managing fragmented demand from end users and navigating complex logistics. Industry associations like the Shandong Cross-Border E-Commerce Association are addressing these issues by providing training and promoting policy implementation to help small and micro enterprises overcome initial difficulties.
