Nepal Seeks International Support for Tunnel Rescue and Forensic Operations

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— The Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MoFA) in Nepal has called for immediate international assistance and support for ongoing rescue and relief efforts. The government is seeking specialized equipment such as tunnel rescue tools, freezers, LiDAR technology, DNA testing kits, and forensic expertise from countries including the USA, Singapore, China, India, South Korea, Japan, and others.

International Assistance

Nepal has already received support from several nations. A team of 18 forensic experts specializing in DNA analysis from India arrived on August 29 to assist with the operations. The country is also coordinating with specialized technical teams for tunnel rescue efforts from India and China, working at sites like Mailung (Chilime) and Syafrubesi, as well as Upper Trisuli 3A.

Specific Requests

The MoFA spokesperson, Lok Bahadur Poudel Chhetri, informed that Nepal has requested essential non-food items and services from various countries. These include freezers and DNA testing kits from the USA, relief-specific items like DVI from Singapore, belly bridges and high-capacity drones from China and Singapore.

Coordination Efforts

The government is actively coordinating with the international community for additional support. A coordination effort to mobilize a DVI team from Singapore is currently underway. Nepal has also received generous pledges of monetary assistance from its global partners, which it deeply values during this challenging time.
