Kathmandu— The German government has formally accused Russia of attempting a drone attack on Leipzig/Halle Airport, located in the eastern part of Germany. The incident occurred on August 4 when a drone loaded with explosives was discovered near a Ukrainian aircraft and subsequently defused by authorities. Interior Minister Alexander Dobrindt stated that evidence from police investigations, patterns of offenses, and intelligence findings point to Russian responsibility for the attempted attack.

Pattern of Hybrid Operations

Dobrindt emphasized that the drone attack fits into a broader pattern of what he termed “Russian hybrid operations” in Europe. He noted that several European countries supporting Ukraine against Russia’s invasion have reported an increase in sabotage attempts, which they attribute to Russian involvement.

Diplomatic Measures and Sanctions

In response to the alleged attack, Germany plans to take several diplomatic actions. The Russian ambassador has been summoned, and its consulate general in Bonn and cultural center in Berlin will be closed. Additionally, Germany intends to seek further sanctions and travel restrictions on Russian nationals through the European Union framework.

International Support

The European Union and NATO have pledged support for Germany's stance against Russia. EU chief Ursula von der Leyen stated that the bloc is preparing additional sanctions against Moscow, reaffirming their commitment to deter any actions undermining freedom and security in Europe.
