Nepal PM Links Bhotekoshi Flood to Climate Change, Seeks Global Response

Kathmandu— Prime Minister Balendra Shah of Nepal has stated that the flash floods in the Bhotekoshi River in Rasuwa, which occurred last Wednesday, were caused by climate change. In a social media post, he emphasized that rising temperatures in the Himalayan region have contributed to this disaster and highlighted the need for an international response.

Climate Change Impact

Prime Minister Shah underscored that the flood is indicative of increasing risks due to climate change in the Himalayan region. He noted that experts believe the flood was caused by a large portion of the glacier falling from a great height, leading to significant melting and subsequent flooding as it moved downhill.

Government Response

Since the disaster struck on August 26, the government has been actively engaged in search, rescue, relief distribution, and rehabilitation efforts. A total of 2,653 people have received shelter and aid in 19 temporary shelters in Nuwakot, including survivors from Rasuwa.

International Assistance

Nepal has received substantial international support following the disaster. India provided 68.5 tons of relief supplies and a rescue team, while Pakistan contributed 86 tons of aid. China donated 300 million rupees to the Prime Minister's Disaster Relief Fund and sent a rescue team along with 50 tons of supplies.
