John Ternus Takes Over As Apple CEO After Tim Cook’s 15-Year Tenure

Kathmandu— John Ternus has officially succeeded Tim Cook as the chief executive officer of Apple after Cook’s 15-year tenure. Ternus, who previously served as senior vice president for hardware engineering since 2021, took over the role on Tuesday. The transition was announced in April, with Cook moving into the position of executive chairman.

Ternus's Background and Experience

John Ternus joined Apple’s product design team in 2001 and has since climbed through the ranks. He was appointed vice president of hardware engineering in 2013 before becoming senior vice president for hardware engineering in 2021. Under his leadership, Apple launched several well-known products such as the iPad and AirPods.

Analysts' Views on Ternus's Appointment

The appointment of John Ternus is seen by analysts as a signal that Apple will focus more on hardware innovation. Babak Hafezi, professor of international business at American University, told Al Jazeera that the move marks a new stage in Apple’s history by intertwining AI with hardware rather than treating it as a standalone product.

Upcoming Product Launches

Apple is set to launch its latest iPhone and potentially its first foldable device on September 9. Analysts predict that Apple will ship 17 million foldable iPhones by the end of next year, capturing 40 percent market share. Additionally, a new version of Siri with enhanced conversational abilities is expected to be released this month.

Challenges Ahead

Ternus faces several challenges, including Apple's slower rollout in the generative AI space and supply chain strains due to increased demand for chips. The company also needs to navigate trade tensions between the US and China while diversifying its supply chain to India and Vietnam.
