Kathmandu— Nepal's insurance industry has seen a surge in claims amounting to an estimated Rs. 25.87 billion after the recent Bhotekoshi flood and related disasters. As of Monday, preliminary data from the Nepal Insurance Authority shows that 15 insurance companies have received a total of 583 claims.

Claim Distribution by Category

Engineering and contractors’ risk insurance accounted for the largest share of the estimated claims with 52 claims worth Rs. 20.51 billion. Property insurance followed, with 113 claims amounting to Rs. 2.35 billion, while motor insurance had 313 claims valued at Rs. 1.55 billion. Transport insurance recorded 47 claims totaling Rs. 897.74 million, and other categories saw 54 claims worth Rs. 529.29 million. Health insurance claims were the smallest category with four claims amounting to Rs. 4.16 million.

Individual Insurance Companies' Claims

The Oriental Insurance Company received the highest number of claims, totaling eight and estimated at Rs. 13.04 billion. United Ajod Insurance followed with 38 claims worth Rs. 4.97 billion. Sanima GIC Insurance reported 102 claims amounting to Rs. 2.10 billion, while Siddhartha Premier Insurance received 67 claims estimated at Rs. 1.89 billion. Shikhar Insurance recorded the highest number of claims among major insurers with 127 claims totaling Rs. 1.88 billion.

The Nepal Insurance Authority continues to process these claims, providing financial support to those affected by the Bhotekoshi flood and associated disasters.
