Pope Leo XIV’s Call for Human Dignity in AI Era

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Pope Leo XIV has issued an encyclical titled 'Magnifica Humanitas' that calls for the protection of human dignity in the age of artificial intelligence. The document, released on May 25, emphasizes the risks AI poses to humanity and advocates for a culture of limits and shared responsibility. However, critics argue that while the diagnosis is clear, the encyclical lacks specific institutional solutions to combat these challenges.

Critique of Capitalism

The encyclical identifies structural injustices within capitalism but does not provide a detailed critique of the institutions responsible for these issues. Unlike previous popes, Leo XIV’s approach is less institutionally specific and more focused on individual responsibility rather than collective action.

Impact on Civil Society

The encyclical calls for civil society to play a role in addressing AI's challenges but lacks clarity on how various groups can collaborate effectively. Previous popes, including Pope Francis, emphasized the importance of trade unions and social movements as key actors in shaping societal change.

Individualism vs. Social Bonds

Leo XIV’s emphasis on individual responsibility contrasts with earlier Catholic teachings that prioritized building strong social bonds and institutions. Critics argue this shift could undermine efforts to address the structural issues posed by AI, focusing instead on personal orientation.
