Hollywood’s Global Influence Wanes as Local Cultures Rise

Kathmandu— In the mid-80s, American playwright Sam Shepard imparted a lesson in trust to an aspiring writer at a New York bar. Today, this anecdote serves as a metaphor for broader shifts in global cultural consumption. Once dominant, Hollywood's influence is waning as audiences increasingly embrace local and regional stories, reflecting a complex interplay of anti-American sentiment, evolving entertainment industries, and the rise of streaming platforms.

Hollywood’s Cultural Impact

In postwar decades, America projected economic growth, technological ambition, and cultural openness. Hollywood films were not just stories but symbols of a future being invented in America. However, today's audiences are increasingly embracing local cultures and no longer rely solely on Hollywood for their entertainment needs.

Rise of Non-American Entertainment

Non-American entertainment industries have found global audiences through films like 'Squid Game' from South Korea and 'RRR' from India. Streaming platforms such as Netflix have also contributed to this shift by producing content in various languages, reflecting local cultures and stories.

Anti-American Sentiment

In some regions of the Middle East and Latin America, anti-American sentiment has evolved into cultural distancing. This is not just about organized boycotts but a waning appetite for American visions of heroism and moral authority. For instance, a Buddhist in London expressed reluctance to watch another American action movie.

Hollywood’s Adaptation

Despite these challenges, Hollywood has sometimes flourished even when anti-American sentiment was strong. Countries critical of US foreign policy have still consumed large quantities of American entertainment. However, the streaming era has weakened Hollywood's influence by promoting local content.
