Nepal’s Hidden Labour Crisis: The Unseen Struggle of Care Work

ABC NEWS
१७ श्रावण २०८३, आइतबार   १० : २४   बजे

Kathmandu— In many Nepali households, the constant labor of care—ranging from preparing meals to managing emotional well-being—is largely carried out by women without recognition or compensation. This unseen work is essential for maintaining family life but often goes unnoticed and unacknowledged, leading to significant social and economic consequences.

The Invisible Infrastructure of Care

Care work in Nepali homes is a constant yet invisible labor that sustains daily life. It includes tasks such as cooking meals, washing uniforms, managing medication schedules, and providing emotional support. This work is predominantly done by women who are expected to fulfill these responsibilities without formal recognition or payment.

The societal expectation of care work being natural and unpaid has profound implications for the well-being of caregivers themselves. Women often face limitations in their education and career opportunities due to the demands of household duties, leading to a cycle of underappreciation and overwork.

Consequences of Invisible Labour

The lack of recognition for care work has far-reaching consequences within families. Children may grow up believing that essential tasks such as cooking and cleaning are effortless or naturally occurring, rather than the result of dedicated effort and sacrifice.

This invisibility not only limits educational opportunities for girls but also perpetuates gender roles that restrict women's participation in paid employment. It also leads to resentment among family members who do not see the full extent of the labor involved.
