Kathmandu— Life in eastern Madhes has returned to normal after a week of tension following a tragic incident that left two people dead and dozens injured. The situation improved significantly with the cremation of the deceased, an agreement between the government and local communities, enhanced security measures, and ongoing dialogue at political and social levels.
Security Measures Lifted
The curfew imposed in Sunsari district for five days was lifted on Saturday morning. However, prohibitory orders remain in place until Sunday morning, prohibiting gatherings of more than five people and restricting public demonstrations. The Nepal Police, Armed Police Force, and other security agencies are still mobilized to maintain order.
Economic Activities Resume
Local markets across Dewanganj, Harinagar, Inaruwa, Duhabi, Barju, Koshi Rural Municipality, Bhokraha Narsingh, Gadhi, and nearby areas have reopened. Farmers are bringing food grains, vegetables, milk, and other agricultural products to the market, while consumers are returning to purchase daily necessities.
The District Administration Office in Dhanusha also lifted the curfew on Saturday morning, allowing markets, commercial establishments, and financial institutions to reopen. Both public and private transport services have resumed regular operations.
Political Efforts to Normalize Situation
Prime Minister Sher Bahadur Deuba and Home Minister Sudan Gurung visited affected districts to address tensions with local representatives, security agencies, civil society, religious leaders, and community members. The government formed an investigation committee to find the truth behind the incident and submit a report with recommendations for preventing future occurrences.
Political parties have urged citizens to exercise restraint and maintain social harmony.
The situation in eastern Madhes continues to improve as security measures are lifted, economic activities resume, and political efforts normalize the region. However, prohibitory orders remain in place to prevent any untoward incidents.
