Kathmandu— In the face of rapidly rising floodwaters in Assam's Sivasagar district, local residents from nearby villages have stepped up to rescue over 1,000 stranded individuals. The water level rose so quickly that villagers left behind their homes and belongings to help others, highlighting the community’s resilience during this crisis.

Community Response

Sohan Chaudhary, one of the local rescuers, described the urgency of the situation. 'The water rose so fast that we left our homes to rescue others,' he said. Another villager, Kanhaiya Chaudhary, initially went out to collect floating wood but quickly shifted focus when he noticed the rising water levels. 'We first got our family members and children to safety, then focused on rescuing others,' he explained.

Impact of Floods

The floods have affected five districts in Assam: Golaghat, Jorhat, Sivasagar, Charaideo, and Dhemaji. A total of 21 revenue circles and 335 villages are impacted, affecting over 136,000 people and damaging nearly 15,422 hectares of crop land. The human toll has risen to three deaths in Sivasagar district, with two persons still missing.

Authorities continue to monitor the situation as relief efforts are underway in affected areas. Assam Minister Pijush Hazarika visited flood-affected constituencies to review rehabilitation measures.
