Kathmandu— Congress Rajya Sabha Member of Parliament (MP) Renuka Chowdhury has moved an Adjournment Motion Notice in the Indian parliament, demanding a comprehensive audit of the Shri Ram Janmabhoomi Teerth Kshetra Trust. The motion seeks to suspend regular parliamentary business to discuss financial transparency and accountability issues.

In her notice, Chowdhury urged that Zero Hour, Question Hour, and other listed business of the day be suspended to enable a discussion on the need for an independent audit of the Trust's accounts and overall functioning. She also sought a comprehensive statement from the Government detailing the legal and regulatory framework governing the Trust, including governmental oversight, financial reporting requirements, audit mechanisms, and standards of public disclosure.

Public Concern

The demand for an audit comes amid increasing public concern over issues relating to financial transparency and accountability. According to Chowdhury's notice, these matters require urgent consideration by the House. The Opposition plans to stage a protest at the Makar Dwar of Parliament on Monday, reiterating its demands for a statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding police actions during protests in July 2023.

Ongoing Controversies

The development follows recent controversies such as Purnea MP Pappu Yadav's imitation of a priest to collect donations while criticizing the government over alleged Ram Mandir donation theft. Additionally, there are concerns about an attack on Yadav in the national capital last Sunday. These events coincide with speculation that the Centre may introduce the Foreign Contribution (Regulation) Act (FCRA) Amendment Bill during the ongoing Monsoon Session.

Parliament is expected to witness another day of confrontations as the Opposition continues pressing its demands, while the government seeks to advance its legislative agenda.
