Pakistan Tightens Digital Censorship Amid Jammu and Kashmir Tensions

Kathmandu— Pakistan has escalated digital censorship measures, restricting access to numerous news websites and international broadcasters like Al Jazeera English. The move targets platforms reporting on protests, security crackdowns, and public grievances in the region of Pakistan-occupied Jammu and Kashmir (PoJK).

Court Orders Sparking Restrictions

Earlier this year, an Islamabad judicial magistrate court sought to ban several YouTube channels after the National Cyber Crime Investigation Agency criticized them for sharing content deemed intimidating and derogatory against state institutions. The June 24 court order cited by Al Jazeera includes channels associated with the main opposition party, its leader Imran Khan, and journalists critical of the government.

Impact on Freedom of Expression

Digital rights campaigners warn that these bans would further suppress freedom of expression in Pakistan. With traditional media heavily stifled by authorities, social media remains a crucial avenue for public dissent. YouTube has notified 27 content creators that their channels risk being removed if they do not comply with court directives.

Violence and Casualties

The Joint Awami Action Committee released footage showing security forces dragging and assaulting an unarmed civilian in Muzaffarabad. According to the Human Rights Council of Pakistan-occupied Jammu & Kashmir, a total of 80 fatalities have been documented since the start of protests, including 33 civilians before July 27 and 43 from that date onwards across Rawalakot, Mirpur, and Muzaffarabad. The committee is calling for an independent investigation into these incidents.

Election Disruptions

The second phase of elections in PoJK faced widespread disruptions due to road blockades and protests, raising questions about the credibility of the electoral process. Polling was scheduled across 21 constituencies but was hindered in several areas.
