Congress MP Seeks Debate on Anti-Defection Law

Kathmandu— On Tuesday, Congress Member of Parliament Manish Tewari submitted an adjournment motion notice in the Lok Sabha seeking suspension of regular business to debate a proposed anti-defection law. The move aims to address what he termed 'mass political defections' driven by opportunism rather than ideological differences.

Proposed Anti-Defection Law

Tewari's notice, addressed to the Secretary-General of the Lok Sabha, calls for a discussion on framing an anti-defection law that discourages politically motivated defections while ensuring space for principled dissent. He described this as a matter of urgent public importance and urged the government to adjourn scheduled business to allow a full debate.

The proposed law would aim to curb opportunistic mass defections, which Tewari believes are devoid of genuine ideological or policy differences.

Scheduled Legislative Business

Despite Tewari's notice, the Lok Sabha is set to proceed with its scheduled legislative business. Union Finance Minister Nirmala Sitharaman will introduce the Taxation and Other Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026, which seeks further amendments to several key financial laws.

Sitharaman will also lay on the Table an explanatory statement outlining reasons for immediate legislation through the promulgation of the Income-tax (Amendment) Ordinance, 2026. The House is scheduled to discuss Demands for Excess Grants for 2022-23 and consider the Appropriation (No. 3) Bill, 2026.
