Kathmandu— In the aftermath of a sudden and violent flood that struck parts of Assam's Sivasagar district on July 19, many families remain displaced and destitute. Kirpan Kurmi and his family lost everything within seconds as water surged through their home, leaving them to seek shelter in makeshift tents near Bihubor daily market.
Survivors Struggle with Loss
Kirpan Kurmi describes the nightmarish experience of losing all his possessions and narrowly saving his wife from drowning. 'We didn't expect such a huge flood,' he says, adding that they were left with nothing but their clothes after the water washed away everything in sight. His family now resides on higher ground near Bihubor daily market, sleeping on stones without beds or proper shelter.
Faguni Kurmi, Kirpan's wife, echoes his sentiment: 'The flood destroyed all and we are struggling to live.' More than 300 families from the area have joined them in makeshift tents, facing similar hardships.
Uncertainty Looms Over Future
With thick layers of mud and silt still inside their homes after floodwaters receded, survivors are struggling to rebuild their livelihoods. They fear another devastating flood if the water rises again at night. Naren Rai, a 53-year-old resident, says he has never seen such severe flooding in his lifetime.
Anjali Karmakar recounts her harrowing escape with her children: 'When the water level reached my neck, my husband took them on his shoulder and we fled to safety.' She now lives in a makeshift tent with no home or possessions left.
