The budget for the financial year 2026-27 comes amid heightened political tensions following the arrest and subsequent release of DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin.

The Tamil Nadu government, led by Chief Minister C Joseph Vijay, unveiled its maiden budget in the state's legislative assembly. Key announcements expected include an increase in women’s monthly honorarium and free bus travel for citizens. The 'Vettri Thamizhagam' Vision Document is also set to be launched during this session.

The government had previously released a White Paper on Tamil Nadu's finances, revealing that the state's actual outstanding debt stood at ₹13.18 lakh crore, including combined public sector undertakings’ debts.

Political Controversy

Tensions escalated when DMK leader Udhayanidhi Stalin was arrested for alleged offensive remarks against actress Trisha during a protest in Thanjavur. The arrest drew criticism, with Stalin asserting that it was a deliberate attempt to divert attention from administrative failures.

Stalin's release came after the Madras High Court intervened and directed the Tamil Nadu Police to complete their questioning before releasing him. Senior DMK leader NR Elango accused the state government of wanting to prevent Stalin from attending the budget session.

With the first day of the assembly session marking significant announcements, the political landscape in Tamil Nadu remains tense as the state grapples with economic and administrative challenges.
