Former Bangladesh PM Claims Student Protests Were Covert Political Campaign

Kathmandu— Former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina of Bangladesh has accused organized groups of weaponizing student protests over quota reforms into a violent political campaign aimed at her ouster, during a virtual media interaction in New Delhi on Wednesday. She stated that genuine students were manipulated and used as cover for violence against law enforcement and public infrastructure.

Hasina's Perspective on the Protests

Sheikh Hasina emphasized her administration’s efforts to resolve the quota reform agitation through dialogue, legal measures, and patience. However, she alleged that these peaceful intentions were subverted by organized groups seeking political objectives rather than genuine reforms.

"From the beginning, my government tried to resolve the issue peacefully," Hasina said. "But behind the language of reform, organised groups were working to turn students' demands into a violent political instrument."

Violence and Persecution Post-Deposition

Hasina detailed the escalation of violence following her deposition in August 2024. She alleged that symbols associated with Bangladesh's Liberation War were vandalized, while members of minority communities and journalists faced targeted attacks.

"The historic Dhanmondi 32 residence of Sheikh Mujibur Rahman was demolished," Hasina said, adding that this act aimed to erase the legacy of the Liberation War.

Indian Government's Stance

India’s Ministry of External Affairs (MEA) spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal clarified that New Delhi does not endorse any statements made during the press event. The MEA has maintained a policy ensuring no political activity targeting another sovereign nation is conducted from Indian territory.

"The government has no involvement whatsoever in it," Jaiswal stated.
