Sheikh Hasina’s decision comes amid ongoing political uncertainty in Bangladesh following the collapse of her administration in 2024. Since then, she has been living in exile in India and continues to face legal challenges back home. During her press conference, Hasina highlighted a history marked by personal tragedy and political turmoil, including imprisonment and exile, which have shaped her current resolve.

The Indian government has sought to distance itself from Hasina’s press conference, clarifying that New Delhi does not endorse any statements made during the session. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated, “The government has no involvement whatsoever in it. Neither does it endorse any views that may be expressed at the forum.”

India granted asylum to Hasina but maintains a strict policy ensuring that no political activity targeting another sovereign nation is conducted from Indian territory.
