ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— Authorities in Guatemala have evacuated hundreds of residents from communities near the active Fuego volcano after it erupted on Tuesday, August 4, 2026. The eruption sent clouds of ash, toxic gases, and lava flows down the mountain's slopes, posing a significant threat to nearby villages and towns.

Eruption Details

The Fuego volcano, one of Central America’s most active, began its latest eruption on Tuesday morning. Lava flows and ash clouds were visible from several kilometers away, prompting immediate action by local authorities to evacuate residents in the affected areas.

According to Moises Castillo, an AP photographer who documented the event, “The sky turned dark as the ash cloud rose high into the atmosphere.”

Evacuation Efforts

Emergency services quickly set up temporary shelters for displaced families in nearby towns such as San Juan Alotenango and Escuintla. Evacuees were provided with basic necessities including food, water, medical supplies, and first aid kits.

A woman from El Porvenir, a village on the slopes of Fuego, said, “We had no choice but to leave our homes when we saw the lava coming down the mountain.”
