US Offers $25 Million Reward for Capture of Mexico Cartel Leader

ABC NEWS

Kathmandu— The U.S. government has increased its pressure on a Mexican cartel by offering a $25 million reward for information leading to the capture of Juan Carlos González, also known as 'Pelón,' who is believed to lead the Jalisco New Generation Cartel (CJNG). This move escalates from an initial $5 million offer and comes alongside newly unsealed charges against five other high-ranking CJNG leaders.

Escalating Pressure on CJNG

The U.S. Department of Justice, under acting Attorney General Todd Blanche, announced the reward increase as part of a broader strategy to dismantle the cartel's leadership structure. The move follows recent sanctions imposed by the United States against 50 individuals and companies linked to CJNG, including González, which froze assets and blocked financial transactions in the U.S.

The escalation is seen as an effort to intensify pressure on Mexico’s government to take more decisive action against drug cartels. President Donald Trump's administration has been particularly vocal about its security agenda, threatening military intervention if necessary.

CJNG's Extensive Reach

The Jalisco New Generation Cartel is designated as a foreign terrorist organization by the U.S., reflecting its significant influence and operations across Mexico. The cartel has expanded its activities beyond drug trafficking to include legitimate businesses such as avocado production, making it one of the most diversified criminal organizations in the region.

CJNG operates in 21 out of Mexico’s 32 states and has a presence in several countries, including the United States. Its control over illegal narcotics importation into the U.S., particularly fentanyl, cocaine, methamphetamine, and other illicit drugs, poses a substantial threat to public safety.

The heightened reward for González’s capture underscores the ongoing efforts by both the U.S. and Mexican governments to combat CJNG's influence and dismantle its operations.
