Kharge Demands Amit Shah’s Statement on Police Action; Rijiju Rejects Opposition Claims

Kathmandu— Mallikarjun Kharge, Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha, on Friday reiterated his demand for Union Home Minister Amit Shah to deliver a statement on the police action against protesters on July 20. Amid opposition demands and constant sloganeering, the Upper House was adjourned until noon. Parliamentary Affairs Minister Kiren Rijiju refuted claims that Chairperson CP Radhakrishnan had directed Shah to appear.

Opposition's Demand

Kharge claimed that the Rajya Sabha Chairperson, CP Radhakrishnan, had issued a direction for Amit Shah to deliver a statement in the House. He accused the treasury benches of not respecting this directive and insulting the House. The Congress leader emphasized that the opposition was demanding an explanation from the Home Minister regarding alleged police excesses against student protesters.

Government's Response

Kiren Rijiju, Parliamentary Affairs Minister, objected to Kharge’s claims, stating that the opposition cannot dictate which minister appears in the House and when. He asserted that Amit Shah is present at Parliament daily from morning till night. Rijiju said, 'The LoP is misleading the House. There has been no direction by the Chair.'

Earlier in the day, Opposition MPs protested against alleged theft of donations at the Ram Temple in Ayodhya and over their demand for a statement from Amit Shah regarding police action.
