Kathmandu— India confirmed Tuesday that it is reviewing a request from Bangladesh to extradite former Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, while also investigating the murder of Bangladeshi activist Sharif Osman Hadi. The response came following discussions between Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi in Dhaka regarding these issues, as well as the return of individuals accused in Hadi’s murder. Ministry of External Affairs spokesperson Randhir Jaiswal stated that India's position on the extradition matter remains unchanged and is being examined through established processes.

Diplomatic Discussions and Extradition Request

Bangladesh Prime Minister Tarique Rahman and Indian High Commissioner Dinesh Trivedi met to discuss several key issues, including Sheikh Hasina’s extradition. A press release from Rahman's office indicated Bangladesh hopes India will expedite the process of extraditing the former prime minister. Jaiswal confirmed that India is looking into the case according to established procedures, reiterating a previously stated position.

Investigation into Activist’s Murder

Investigations are currently underway regarding the murder of Sharif Osman Hadi, who was shot in Dhaka last December and later died from his injuries while receiving medical treatment in Singapore. Bangladeshi authorities have requested India hand over individuals accused in the case. Kolkata Police previously informed the Bangladesh High Commission that two Bangladeshi citizens, Faisal Karim Masud and Alamgir Hossain, had been arrested as suspects.

Bilateral Relations Emphasized

Indian High Commissioner Trivedi described his meeting with Prime Minister Rahman as “fruitful,” noting the shared border and common aspirations between India and Bangladesh. The Indian High Commission stated on social media that India intends to collaborate with Bangladesh in a “positive, constructive and forward-looking manner” with a focus on people-to-people relations. They exchanged views on matters of mutual interest and discussed strengthening bilateral ties.

The extradition request and investigation into Hadi’s murder remain ongoing as both countries continue diplomatic discussions and legal processes.
