The two held joint campaign events on university campuses in April 2026. Kyle Shideler, director at the Center for Security Policy, testified before Congress that El-Sayed is connected to terrorists and the Muslim Brotherhood through family affiliations. This connection adds to concerns about the direction of the Democratic Party.

A Shift From Earlier Socialist Figures

While socialists have long been present within the Democratic Party – exemplified by figures like Bernie Sanders and Alexandria Ocasio-Cortez – there is a perceived shift towards more radical elements.
