Kathmandu— The Embassy of India in Kathmandu commemorated India's 80th Independence Day on Saturday by hosting a program that celebrated India’s progress, highlighted the strong ties between Nepal and India, and recognized the contributions of Nepali Gorkha soldiers serving in the Indian Army. The event included the unfurling of the Indian national flag, the broadcast of the President of India's address, and the felicitation of families of deceased soldiers, alongside cultural performances and educational initiatives.

Honoring Service and Sacrifice

A key element of the Independence Day celebration was the recognition of Nepali Gorkha soldiers who died while serving in the Indian Army. The Embassy presented insurance cheques totaling Rs. 82 million to the widows and next of kin of eleven deceased soldiers, acknowledging their sacrifice and dedication. This gesture underscores the long-standing military cooperation and deep bonds between Nepal and India.

Promoting Cultural and Educational Exchange

The celebrations extended beyond honoring veterans to include initiatives promoting education and cultural understanding. The Embassy provided book grants to 22 educational institutions and libraries across all seven provinces of Nepal, aiming to improve access to learning materials for students and readers. Furthermore, winners of competitions focused on themes like ‘Viksit Bharat’ (Developed India) and awareness about India were felicitated during the ceremony.

Strengthening Bilateral Ties

The Independence Day program served as a platform to reaffirm the close relationship between Nepal and India. Cultural performances by teachers and students from the Swami Vivekananda Cultural Centre added a vibrant dimension to the event, showcasing shared traditions and fostering goodwill. The Embassy stated that the activities reflected the strong people-to-people and institutional ties between the two nations, alongside India’s commitment to cooperation in education and culture.
