Trump’s Approval Rating Hits New Low Amid Concerns Over Iran Conflict

Kathmandu— United States President Donald Trump has seen his approval rating fall to its lowest point during his current term, with just 33 percent of respondents approving of his job performance according to a recent Reuters/Ipsos poll. This decline coincides with widespread American concern over the ongoing US-Israel war on Iran and its economic consequences, particularly rising fuel costs. The poll was conducted over four days and revealed that 64 percent of Americans disapprove of Trump’s handling of his duties. Initially promising a short conflict, Trump now faces skepticism as most Americans anticipate a prolonged engagement.

Plummeting Approval Numbers

The latest Reuters/Ipsos poll indicates a significant drop in President Trump's approval rating, reaching 33 percent—matching the lowest level recorded in December 2017 during his first term. This marks a new low for the president and signals growing dissatisfaction among US citizens. The survey found that 64 percent of Americans disapprove of how he is handling his job overall.

War Concerns and Economic Impact

A majority of Americans are increasingly concerned about the ongoing war on Iran, which began in February. Consumers have experienced a dramatic rise in fuel prices since the conflict started, with gasoline costs up nearly a third compared to last year, according to the American Automobile Association. The poll revealed that 80 percent of Americans believe US involvement in Iran “will go on for an extended period of time”, including majorities from both Democratic and Republican parties.

Shifting Views Within Trump's Base

Even within President Trump’s core base, support for the war with Iran appears to be waning. A recent Politico poll showed that only a third of self-identified “Make America Great Again” (MAGA) voters believe the economic costs associated with the conflict are justified. This suggests growing unease among even his most loyal supporters regarding the financial implications of the ongoing military engagement. Trump recently defended rising gas prices, stating at a rally that paying “a tiny little bit more for your gasoline” is worth preventing Iran from developing a nuclear weapon.

Initial Promises Versus Current Reality

President Trump initially campaigned on promises to control inflation and avoid protracted wars. He had pledged the conflict with Iran would be resolved within weeks, arguing it was necessary to prevent Iran from acquiring nuclear capabilities. However, despite initial expectations of a swift resolution, Iran has demonstrated resilience and maintained significant control over oil and gas exports through the Strait of Hormuz even as the conflict has cooled.

The poll data suggests that President Trump faces increasing political headwinds due to concerns about the war on Iran and its economic consequences. Further developments in the conflict and their impact on fuel prices will likely continue to shape public opinion.
