Kathmandu— The United States has suspended negotiations with Iran and is now pursuing a strategy of gradually increasing economic pressure, CNN reported Tuesday. This shift comes after the US bombing campaign near the Strait of Hormuz proved largely ineffective and depleted stockpiles of precision munitions and interceptor missiles. President Donald Trump reportedly received warnings from military officials that potential targets in the region had been exhausted, prompting a change in approach.
Military Campaign Reaches Limits
The US abruptly ended its recent series of strikes late last month, according to CNN, after facing limitations in both munitions and viable targets. Military leaders reportedly informed President Trump that they had utilized their list of targets near the Strait of Hormuz. This development appears to have been a key factor in altering the administration’s strategy regarding Iran.
From ‘Hammer’ to ‘Strangle’
White House officials communicated a change in tactics to political allies, describing a move “from ‘hammer Iran ASAP’ to ‘strangle them’ over time,” CNN reported. This suggests a transition from immediate military intervention toward sustained economic pressure as the primary means of influencing Iranian policy.
Negotiations Suspended
President Trump has directed negotiators—including Vice President J.D. Vance, Steve Witkoff, and Jared Kushner—to cease talks with Tehran. In a post on Truth Social Tuesday, Trump confirmed that “there are no talks or conversations going on, or scheduled, with the Islamic Republic of Iran,” while asserting that the US blockade of Iranian ports remains fully in effect.
The United States has effectively paused both military engagement and diplomatic efforts with Iran, opting instead for a long-term strategy focused on economic pressure.
