Poland’s Uprising Commemoration Campaign Faces Backlash Over Content Creator Selection

Kathmandu— An association commemorating Poland's 1944 Warsaw Uprising briefly appointed an adult-content creator as an ambassador before reversing course amid widespread outrage, according to reports from local media on Thursday. The Warszawa44 Association had presented Monika Laskowska, known for her OnlyFans account, as an ‘Ambassador of Remembrance’ for the uprising's 82nd anniversary, a campaign which received honorary patronage from Poland’s Culture Ministry. The decision sparked immediate criticism online and from public figures questioning the appropriateness of associating adult content with such a historically significant event.

Uprising Background and Initial Appointment

The Warsaw Uprising commenced on August 1, 1944, as an act of resistance by Polish forces against Nazi German occupation, coinciding with the advance of Soviet troops. The 63-day revolt ultimately failed, resulting in widespread destruction of Poland’s capital and the deaths of an estimated 150,000 to 200,000 civilians. Warszawa44 stated that Laskowska was chosen due to her public profile, social media reach, and expressed commitment to preserving the memory of the uprising. She is also known for interviewing participants in Poland’s “freak fight” events – combat competitions featuring internet personalities.

Public Outcry and Official Response

The selection of Laskowska quickly drew criticism on social media platforms, with many questioning whether an adult-content influencer was a suitable representative for commemorating the uprising. Polish media personality Karolina Korwin-Piotrowska, whose father fought in the uprising, publicly condemned the campaign, accusing organizers of prioritizing social media engagement over respect for the historical event. She sarcastically suggested recruiting even more controversial figures to broaden reach. Sebastian Meitz, an expert at Poland’s Sobieski Institute, also questioned Culture Minister Marta Cienkowska about the appointment, inquiring whether it fell under the purview of “culture” or “national heritage.”

Ministry Distances Itself and Role Suspended

The Polish Culture Ministry swiftly distanced itself from the decision, stating that the list of ambassadors had not been consulted with them. The ministry clarified that while they provided honorary patronage for the project, they did not offer any financial or organizational support. Warszawa44 president Dariusz Michalak confirmed Laskowska was their selection but ultimately reversed course following the backlash, suspending her role as ambassador and removing her photo from Instagram.

The Warszawa44 Association has removed Monika Laskowska from her position as ‘Ambassador of Remembrance,’ effectively ending the controversy surrounding her initial appointment.
