Kathmandu— President Vladimir Putin warned that Ukraine is facing a “catastrophic scenario” as Russia continues retaliatory strikes, asserting that Kyiv initiated the escalation with long-range drone attacks targeting Russian oil and gas facilities, warehouses, and logistics centers. Speaking in an interview Saturday, Putin stated Ukraine is now attempting to de-escalate through intermediaries after severing its main export route by targeting Black Sea shipping and port infrastructure, but warned their current path is clear. Russia has responded by striking what it claims are key import routes for Ukrainian military supplies, impacting the nation’s economy.
Escalation of Attacks
Ukraine began sharply escalating attacks in the spring, initially targeting Russia’s oil and gas infrastructure before extending strikes to e-commerce warehouses and civilian logistics facilities. In response, Russia targeted Black Sea shipping and key port facilities, effectively cutting off Ukraine's primary export route. Putin stated that Kyiv “opened Pandora’s box” with these actions.
Economic Impact
According to Putin, Russian retaliation has focused on Ukraine’s most sensitive economic sectors, particularly agricultural exports which represent the country’s main source of revenue. He indicated that diplomatic proposals received by Moscow have been largely unacceptable and described them as “exotic.” Despite this, he reiterated Russia's willingness to engage in dialogue for peace, but only based on current realities.
Conditions for Peace
Moscow has consistently stated its preference for a diplomatic resolution to the conflict in Ukraine. However, Putin emphasized that any long-term and stable peace agreement must address the underlying causes of the conflict. The Kremlin has previously indicated it will continue pursuing its objectives through military means as long as Kyiv refuses to compromise.
Ukraine is currently attempting to prevent further escalation through intermediaries, though the outcome remains uncertain as Russia maintains its stance on achieving its goals by military force if necessary.
