Kathmandu— Over Rs 24.2674 billion (approximately $183 million USD) worth of agricultural products entered Nepal through the Kakarbhitta border crossing during the fiscal year 2082/83 BS, according to officials at the Plant Quarantine Office Kakarbhitta. The imported goods included cereals, pulses, fresh vegetables and fruits originating from India, China, Australia, and Bangladesh, with cereals and pulses comprising the largest portion of the total value.

Import Volume and Composition

The agricultural imports totaled Rs 24.2674 billion, reflecting significant cross-border trade through Kakarbhitta. Cereals accounted for a substantial share of these imports, with rice from India valued at Rs 242 million and pulses from India worth Rs 188 million.

Australia also contributed to the pulse supply, with 1,996 metric tonnes of gram imported at a value of Rs 182 million, alongside 796 metric tonnes of other pulses valued at Rs 108 million.

Source Countries

While India was a primary source for rice and pulses, the import data reveals diversification in Nepal’s agricultural supply chain. Goods also originated from China, Australia, and Bangladesh, indicating reliance on multiple international markets to meet domestic demand.

The continued flow of agricultural imports through Kakarbhitta highlights its importance as a key trade route for Nepal's food security.
