Solar-Powered Kiosks Expand Healthcare Access in Rural Chad

Kathmandu— In rural Chad, accessing healthcare has long been a challenge due to vast distances and limited resources. Residents of villages like Bitkine often faced significant financial burdens – including transportation and consultation costs – simply to see a doctor. However, a new initiative called Telemedan is leveraging solar power and telemedicine to overcome these obstacles, bringing essential medical consultations directly to underserved communities.

Bridging the Distance Gap

For many Chadians living outside of major cities, the journey to receive medical care presented a substantial barrier. Abakar Mahamat, founder of Telemedan, explained that the issue wasn’t solely a lack of doctors but also the sheer distance separating them from those in need. Recognizing this challenge, he launched Telemedan in 2021 with the goal of utilizing technology to bring healthcare closer to remote populations.

Solar-Powered Operation

Telemedan kiosks are designed for areas with limited infrastructure. Each kiosk operates on solar panels and batteries, ensuring functionality even without consistent grid electricity. A local operator registers patients and collects vital signs using equipment like blood pressure monitors and ECG machines. Doctors then join the consultation remotely via a screen, assisted by the operator. The system is also equipped to store patient data locally and synchronize it when internet connectivity is available, with a USSD service providing access for those without internet.

Affordable Healthcare Solutions

The financial burden of seeking medical care has been significantly reduced through Telemedan’s services. Abakar Mahamat noted that traditional journeys for healthcare could cost upwards of $200 when factoring in transport, accommodation, and consultation fees. In contrast, Telemedan consultations range from $2 to $15, making them far more accessible. He emphasized the importance of ensuring patients don't have to choose between seeking medical attention and providing for their families.

Expanding Reach and Capabilities

Starting as a pilot program, Telemedan has expanded to 37 kiosks across 11 provinces, reaching an estimated 143,000 people. The initiative receives support from grants, institutional partnerships—including Chad’s Ministry of Public Health and Prevention—and is now incorporating artificial intelligence for early screening of diabetic retinopathy. While acknowledging the limitations of remote consultations – such as inability to provide emergency treatment or comprehensive examinations – Telemedan aims to serve as a crucial first point of contact within the broader healthcare system.

Telemedan’s success aligns with Chad's National Health Development Plan, which prioritizes digital health solutions. The initiative hopes to expand its reach to one million people in rural communities across sub-Saharan Africa, establishing itself as a sustainable component of the region’s healthcare infrastructure.
