Kathmandu— Residents of rural areas in Rautahat district are turning to alternative energy sources such as biogas and solar power due to their cost-effectiveness compared to conventional electricity. Although the Nepal Electricity Authority has extended services to all 18 local levels, many households continue to rely on alternative energy solutions like biogas plants and solar systems.

Biogas Adoption

More than 4,000 households in Rautahat have installed biogas plants for cooking purposes. Devaki Nepal, chairperson of the Community Biogas Company in Chandrapur, noted that over 200 new installations occurred last year alone. However, she highlighted difficulties faced by residents after the government ceased providing subsidies for these systems.

Solar Energy Popularity

In the southern part of Rautahat district, solar energy is gaining popularity among households that do not keep cattle. Jayanarayan Paudel, manager at Dhaulagiri Solar Energy's Chandrapur branch, reported that more than 400 households in Laxminiya Village Development Committee have installed solar systems.

The growing trend of alternative energy usage could expand further if the government resumes providing subsidies for biogas and solar installations.
