Kathmandu— A Bank of America vice president, Erin Piacenti, has been identified as one of two victims in a stabbing attack that took place on Monday afternoon in Times Square, New York City. The attacker stabbed a 32-year-old woman and a 68-year-old man before being fatally shot by police at the scene.

Details of the Attack

The stabbing occurred around 4:30 PM on West 42nd Street and Seventh Avenue. Erin Piacenti died from her wounds, while the male victim was in stable condition in hospital. Authorities described the attack as random and unprovoked.

Police Response

New York Police Department Commissioner Jessica Tisch stated that responding officers attempted to use a Taser on the attacker but were unsuccessful. The officers then opened fire after the suspect advanced towards them with knives.

"We are shocked and deeply saddened by the tragic loss of our colleague," Bank of America said in a statement to Reuters. "She was a valued teammate who will be greatly missed. Our hearts go out to her family and all of her loved ones."

Context of Recent Attacks

The attack comes weeks after Luigi Mangione pleaded guilty to federal charges connected to the killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson in December 2024. The shooting occurred on West 54th Street near Sixth Avenue, also in Midtown Manhattan.
