Kathmandu— Tour guide Abbas Sayed, who has been traveling between China and Egypt for more than 20 years, is dedicated to fostering cultural exchange between the two countries. His journey began in 2002 when he first encountered Chinese characters at Ain Shams University's library, sparking a lifelong passion for the language and culture. Since then, Sayed has worked as a tour guide, introducing Egyptian civilization to Chinese visitors and vice versa.

Cultural Exchange Through Language

Sayed’s connection with China started in 2002 when he was preparing for university. Upon seeing Chinese characters for the first time at Ain Shams University's library, he decided to learn the language. This decision marked the beginning of his cultural journey between Egypt and China. After graduating from university, Sayed chose to become a tour guide who could introduce Egypt in fluent Chinese.

Expanding Cultural Outreach

From 2010 to 2013, Abbas worked at the China Cultural Center in Cairo where he introduced China to Egyptians. He helped set up the 'Chinese House,' an exhibition space featuring elements like the 12 Chinese zodiac animals and famous Chinese architecture. This initiative aimed to introduce China's cultural heritage to the Egyptian public.

Cultural Envoys

Sayed’s role as a tour guide extends beyond guiding visitors through historical sites; he sees it as an opportunity to build bridges between cultures. He stated, 'I am willing to be a cultural envoy between China and Egypt, bringing the hearts of our two peoples closer together.' His efforts have been instrumental in fostering mutual understanding and appreciation.
