Kathmandu— The 'FNJ Global Media Conference-2026' concluded in Tokyo, Japan, issuing a nine-point 'Tokyo Declaration' that emphasizes the protection of press freedoms, the implementation of journalists' rights, and the need to address challenges posed by rapid technological advancements such as artificial intelligence. The conference, organized by the Federation of Nepali Journalists (FNJ) on the occasion of Nepal-Japan's 70th anniversary of diplomatic relations, was attended by FNJ President Nirmala Sharma and representatives from various foreign chapters.

Declaration Highlights

The Tokyo Declaration includes a call for policy measures related to modern technology, particularly artificial intelligence. It emphasizes that the freedom of press and expression guaranteed by Nepal's constitution should not be restricted in any form. The declaration also urges the government to ensure a supportive environment for journalists in Nepal and highlights the importance of consulting representatives from media organizations while drafting or amending laws related to journalism.

Journalist Rights and Benefits

The conference highlighted the need to effectively implement the Working Journalists Act, ensuring minimum wages, service benefits, social security, appointment letters, insurance, and other labor rights for journalists. It also called on the government to formulate policies and regulatory frameworks to manage challenges arising from advancements in information and communication technology and AI.

Recognition of Overseas Journalists

The declaration recognizes Nepali journalists working abroad who promote Nepal's language, literature, culture, and national interests. It also commits to utilizing the knowledge, skills, research experience, and modern communication practices acquired by these journalists in the development of journalism within Nepal.

Future Initiatives

During the conference, a decision was made to establish the 'FNJ Global Journalism Award' to honor Nepali journalists working overseas for their contributions. This initiative aims to further strengthen ties between Nepali media professionals and promote journalism in Nepal.
