Congress MPs Vow to Reject Delimitation Bill in Tamil Nadu and Puducherry

Kathmandu— Congress MP Manickam Tagore declared on Sunday that all Congress members from Tamil Nadu and Puducherry will vote against the Delimitation Bill if it is reintroduced, citing concerns over its impact on local representation. The bill was previously defeated in April due to insufficient support for a supermajority requirement.

Congress Stance Against Delimitation

Tagore emphasized that the delimitation process is against the voices of Tamil Nadu's people and vowed to vote against it. He stated, "Delimitation goes against the interests of Tamil Nadu’s people." Tagore also mentioned that 10 Congress MPs from the Lok Sabha will join him in opposing the bill.

Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi had earlier criticized supporters of the Delimitation Bill, alleging that it was a conspiracy to weaken political representation and disenfranchise citizens in Tamil Nadu.

Previous Rejection of the Bill

The Constitution (131st Amendment) Bill, 2026, which included provisions for delimitation based on the 2011 Census and expansion of Lok Sabha seats to 850, was defeated in April. The bill required a supermajority of 352 votes out of 528 members present and voting but only managed to secure 298 votes.
