Kathmandu— On August 5, Opposition Members of Parliament (MPs) marched from Prerna Sthal to Makar Dwar in Parliament to protest against Union Home Minister Amit Shah over alleged police brutality during a student demonstration on July 20. The MPs, including Rahul Gandhi and Priyanka Vadra, demanded strict accountability for the use of force against young protestors.

Protestors Demand Accountability

Congress MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra addressed reporters at Parliament, emphasizing that India is a democracy where those in public office must take responsibility. She questioned who authorized the use of lathi charges and pellet guns against student protestors, demanding accountability from the government.

"This is not someone's royal court," she said, stressing that democratic principles require transparency and responsibility when it comes to law enforcement actions.

Intensified Attacks on Government

The Opposition parties have intensified their criticism of Union Home Minister Amit Shah over the handling of the July 20 protest. Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge demanded that Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Home Minister Shah address Parliament regarding the use of excessive force against student protestors.

Kharge alleged that students were beaten, pellet guns were used, tear gas was deployed, and every possible measure was taken to suppress the peaceful demonstration.

The Opposition's demands for accountability continue as they seek answers from the government regarding the handling of the July 20 student protest.
