Anti-Muslim US Congressman Andy Ogles Loses Republican Primary

Kathmandu— US Congressman Andy Ogles, known for his anti-Muslim statements, has lost the Republican primary in Tennessee’s redrawn district to former agricultural commissioner Charlie Hatcher. Despite receiving an endorsement from President Donald Trump, Ogles was defeated by a 6.6-point margin with nearly 90 percent of votes counted on Thursday.

Ogles' Anti-Muslim Statements

Ogles has faced significant outrage and condemnation for his anti-Muslim rhetoric. In March, he wrote on X that 'Muslims don’t belong in American society.' He also made controversial statements about killing Palestinians and Hamas members when confronted by an activist.

Hatcher's Victory

Charlie Hatcher, who has positioned himself as pro-Trump but distanced from Ogles’ rhetoric, secured the Republican nomination. Hatcher will face Chaz Molder, the Democratic mayor of Columbia, in November’s general election.

Political Context

The primary loss for Ogles is part of a broader midterm election season where both parties are selecting their candidates through primaries across various states. All 435 US House seats and 35 out of 100 Senate seats will be contested in November.
