Congress MP Moves Adjournment Motion Over Alleged Police Violence Against Student Protesters

Kathmandu— Congress Member of Parliament (MP) Manickam Tagore moved an adjournment motion in the Lok Sabha on Friday to address allegations of disproportionate force used by police against student protesters during a demonstration held at Delhi's Jantar Mantar on July 20, 2026. Tagore demanded a comprehensive statement from Union Home Minister Amit Shah regarding the incident and called for an independent judicial inquiry into the use of force.

Allegations Against Police Action

Tagore alleged that police used lathi charges, pellet guns, tear gas, and water cannons against protesters, including women. He stated that these actions resulted in injuries and raised public concern about the proportionality of force used to disperse the demonstrators.

Details Demanded by Tagore

The MP demanded several details regarding the incident, such as who authorized the police action and under whose directions it was carried out. He also questioned whether the use of force complied with law, established procedures, and constitutional safeguards governing peaceful assemblies.

Call for Judicial Inquiry

Tagore urged the government to order an independent, impartial, and time-bound judicial inquiry into the incident to establish facts and fix accountability. He also called on the government to withdraw FIRs registered against students in connection with the protests and provide assurance that peaceful student protests will not face police action or legal coercion.
