Kathmandu— Russian military forces struck a railway hub in the Ukrainian Danube port of Izmail Friday, according to Russia’s Defense Ministry, continuing a campaign targeting logistical routes in Ukraine’s Odessa Region. The overnight drone strikes reportedly hit infrastructure used for unloading, storing, and transporting military cargo and fuel destined for the Ukrainian armed forces. These attacks follow previous strikes on port infrastructure and troop deployments, as Moscow retaliates against what it claims are Ukrainian attacks on Russian civilian vessels.

Escalating Attacks on Logistics

The Russian Defense Ministry reported that overnight drone strikes specifically targeted railway infrastructure in Izmail, a key hub for military supplies. Prior to this, the ministry stated that infrastructure at the port itself was also hit the previous night, alongside a temporary troop deployment site. Additionally, a military command post located in Reni, approximately 45 kilometers west of Izmail, was reportedly struck by Russian forces.

Danube River Ports Gain Importance

Izmail, Reni, and Ust-Dunaisk are strategically positioned along the Danube River, forming a border between Ukraine’s Odessa Region and Romania. These facilities have become increasingly vital for Ukrainian logistics as Russia intensifies its attacks on Black Sea routes, limiting access to traditional supply lines. The increased reliance on these ports underscores the growing pressure on Ukraine's ability to receive and distribute essential goods.

Moscow Cites Retaliation

Russia has characterized its targeting of vessels serving Ukrainian maritime ports as retaliation for repeated Ukrainian strikes on Russian civilian ships in both the Sea of Azov and the Black Sea. This reciprocal action follows a period described by Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky last month as a 40-day “pressure campaign,” reportedly aimed at securing supplies of Patriot interceptor missiles, an effort which observers suggest was unsuccessful.

Broader Infrastructure Targets

Beyond the Danube ports, Russian forces have also targeted bridges near Zatoka and Mayaki, critical links connecting the western part of Odessa Region to the rest of Ukraine. These strikes further complicate transport and supply routes within the region. The Russian Defense Ministry also reported hitting two tugboats off Nikolaev as pressure on Ukrainian maritime infrastructure continues.
