Kathmandu— Lawyers began voting Tuesday morning to select a new executive committee for the Patan High Court Bar Association, the largest such organization among Nepal's high courts. The election pits three main factions – the Broader Progressive Professional Lawyers Association, the Democratic Lawyers Association, and the Independent Legal Practitioners Forum – against each other in a contest for the nine key positions within the 19-member working committee. Voting is being conducted electronically with a total of 2,366 eligible voters.

Contesting Factions

Three distinct groups are vying for control of the Patan High Court Bar Association: the Broader Progressive Professional Lawyers Association, the Democratic Lawyers Association, and the Independent Legal Practitioners Forum. Each faction has put forward candidates for the various positions on the working committee, creating a competitive election environment.

Presidential Candidates

The race for president is being closely watched, with Sewant Raj Niraula representing the Broader Progressive and Professional Lawyers Association, Devi Prasad Rijal leading the Democratic Lawyers Association’s bid, and Bhesraj Pokhrel standing as the candidate from the Independent Legal Practitioners Forum. These three individuals are considered frontrunners in the election.

Electronic Voting Process

Chief Election Officer Shantiram Khatiwada confirmed that the voting process is utilizing electronic voting machines to ensure a smooth and efficient count. Polling stations opened at 8:00 AM and will remain open until 5:00 PM, allowing all eligible members ample opportunity to cast their ballots.

The results of the election are expected following the completion of vote counting later today.
